DESTINATION INFO:Bristol was the starting place for voyages of exploration to the New World, from where John Cabot’s ship The Matthew discovered north America in 1497. It has a prosperous maritime history, the principal British port for trade in tobacco and slaves with the American colonies and a hotspot for piracy and smuggling. It’s the largest city in the south west of England, built on steep limestone hills, with many world-famous attractions including the Clifton Suspension Bridge and the SS Great Britain, designed by one of history’s most groundbreaking engineers, Isambard Kingdom Brunel. It’s also home to the graffiti artist Banksy, and his works can be seen across the city.
HIGHLIGHTS:– Walk across the Clifton Suspension Bridge and take in the breathtaking views down the Avon Gorge. – Climb aboard the ship that discovered North America, John Cabot’s The Matthew. – Visit Brandon Hill and climb to the top of Cabot Tower to see panoramic views of the surrounding areas. – See the SS Great Britain, once the longest passenger ship in the world. – Visit the places where Blackbeard and other pirates used to frequent. – Visit the harbour’s 19th-century warehouses which are now a cultural hub, the Harbourside. – See some of Banksy’s famous street art works.
