It has a prosperous maritime history, the principal British port for trade in tobacco and slaves with the American colonies and a hotspot for piracy and smuggling. It’s the largest city in the south west of England, built on steep limestone hills, with many world-famous attractions including the Clifton Suspension Bridge and the SS Great Britain, designed by one of history’s most groundbreaking engineers, Isambard Kingdom Brunel. It’s also home to the graffiti artist Banksy, and his works can be seen across the city.
